I was looking around for a really reliable navigation program for my iPhone, since the Google Maps just weren’t providing enough information. My choice was the iGo Primo app, which is the most advanced of the various editions of software in the iGo My Way product line. The iGO Primo navigation app is compatible with the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. There are many options on the market, so I decided to set my priority on clarity and ease of use. I cant’t stand looking at a cluttered up screen, especially when driving is involved. iGo My Way was the clear winner on that score.
First I discovered that some navigation software relies on the internet, using maps on a server and calculating the routing you need on that internet server, so that means you are dependent on a good satellite signal. The advantage is that all that data is stored on the server instead of on your mobile. But of course there are always problems with getting a good signal while traveling, so I wanted a system that stores the maps locally. It does mean your SD card will be rather full, but it hasn’t been a problem with my iPhone.
The iGo My Way graphics are really advanced. You get 3D rendering of buildings which really helps with orientation when approaching a large intersection. Before starting on your trip, you see an overview of the whole route, also good for clarity. And you can choose from various routes depending on whether you prefer the fastest or the shortest way to your destination.
The names of major roads are shown on the map. The path you should follow is shown very clearly, so no confusion there. A voice guides you by telling you when to turn right or left, and it even tells you which lane to get into, a feature I especially like, because I tend to get nervous about that. And amazingly, if you make a mistake, say, turning too soon or in the wrong direction, iGo My Way will react to that and give you a new set of instructions to get you back on track.
I compared a few navigation apps (Sygic, NDrive) and found the visual information was displayed most clearly by iGo Primo. The graphics are really crisp and state-of-the-art.
